I think the worst thing is the comment. I mean really "just go walk your dog some wear else" is like saying go move to another neighborhood because i want to get my mail naked and that might offend your child.
In my city we are not allowed to put salt down on the street or sidewalk only on our own property the city comes around with a liquid spray stuff that they spray on the street and the sidewalks I have no idea what it is but it works fast and thear is almost no remnant left over (every once in a while there will be a little blue color on the snow wear it did not dissolve all the way through a big drift)
The dogs walk fine on the sidewalk after it is put down I wash feet after walks anyway
