To test for heartworms, they a little blood sample and run an antigen test on it. A vet will run the test before they prescribe heartworm preventative meds. Heartworms are a threat anywhere mosquitos are present. Some will treat only during the summer months, but around here where it is warmer with frequent rains, it is best to treat year round.
