A good conditioner and good brushes/combs should help prevent hair breakage. Use metal combs. For brushes, use Madan or Chris Christensen or something similar that doesn't have little balls at the end of the metal brush bristles. The balls are what break hair. There are many good conditioner choices, including Biogroom's Silk Creme Rinse.

Just like human hair, it is advisable to snip the tips of the hair shaft once a month to prevent split ends and breakage.
