When they are excited or active it is best to use the Action setting (The little running guy) I expect the reason you are having most issues is due to shutter lag, unfortunately the best way to get rid of this is to move up to a digital SLR. If you choose this route you will get far better pictures and do a bit of research on your lenses and can get some nearly prof. looking photos.
