Sometimes a change in diet will help express the anal glands naturally. I feed my boys about half a teaspoon of baby sweet peas every day to make sure their stools are firm enough and large enough to express the glands. Some people use green beans. Neither of my boys ever needs their glands expressed manually.
I use frozen, no salt added peas. Heat them in the microwave and cool with cold water.
