I once thought Copper had ear mites and bought the stuff to treat. He acted the way you describe. When I took him to the vet, it turned out to be an ear irritation probably from bathing him and getting water in the ear canal. The vet said she doesn't see ear mites often.
I say take your dog to the vet. Better to treat the right stuff instead of the wrong.
