I would take him to the vet as soon as you can. It could be an ear infection. Often there are no visible outer signs except for the dog's behavior such as scratching and head shaking. Ear infections are painful and can lead to other illnesses or hearing loss if left untreated. The vet has equipment to look deeper into the ear.
