You are wonderful to give Gumbo a loving home and I am happy for you that he is getting along very well with your dachshund. Was Gumbo pad trained, or allowed to potty anywhere in his previous home?

You don't need to kennel him, but it would be helpful to limit his freedom in your home to either an xpen or one room where you can monitor him closely until his potty habits improve. Take him outside frequently, and after meals and playtime. As Lucyana suggested, walks are great. Keep him outside until he potties. Every time he potties outside, praise him profusely and happily and give him a little treat. He should get the hang of it fairly quickly and then you can taper off the number of times you need to take him out. As you know though, smaller dogs mean smaller bladders.

Definitely clean the accident sites in your house to eliminate the scent so that Gumbo isn't tempted to return to those spots.

Good luck and best wishes.
