Found out today 1yr old has renal failure Hello,
I've had a ROUGH 48 hours....it all started when I took my 1yr old Max to have his shots. The vet said he has peridontal disease, wanted to do some bloodwork to make sure he was up to the procedure since they would have to put him out. Max had been losing weight (went from 3.5lbs to 2.7 as of today) but he has always been a picky eater. Also his dad is 2.5lbs so I assumed that he might be a tiny guy. I've had to switch his food several times but no matter what, he seems to like the wet vs the dry. I got alot of receipes from the wonderful people on this site and have started feeding him that and he loves it (rice, chicken veggies, etc).
Well today I got a call that his bloodwork shows he has renal failure. His BUN is 174 and creatine is 3 (I'm not sure what those number mean but thought I'd share in case someone else does...)
At the present time, he is at the vet receiving fluids and hopefully we will be able to bring him on on Sat. They are also going to do another test to see if he's responding to the fluids and medication and let me know what the next steps will be. I was told he will have to have fluids done at home and change of diet, that this is terminal and that they will try to make sure he's comfortable. So I'm trying to brace myself for the worse, which I just cant imagine because we havent had him but only a year. I feel so ridiculous because I cant stop crying. I came home tonite and he's always so happy to see me....today there's nothing and its heartbreaking. I asked the vet what the prognisis is and she said he may survive 6mos to possible 2yrs. All my life I have always wanted a Yorkie and from the first day I say him, he was so perfect. He literally picked us and after we left the breeder he tried to follow us out the door and we knew then he was "the one." I feel so helpless. I've called the breeder to see if she has any suggestions and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a second opinion. No ultra sounds have been done at this point only bloodwork. I will add that in July, Max had a couple seizures. Test ruled out liver shunt and nothing seemed to be going on with his kidneys so they speculated epilpesy but he never had any others.
Has anyone been through anything like this?
Thanks,
Tyra
