You're absolutely right to suggest spaying and preferably before her first heat. I'm glad your parents did get their GSP to the vet in time!

The infection is known as pyometra and is very serious. With each heat a dog goes through the risk of pyometra increases.

Agree with Ladyjane too, in that the risks or problems with a full term pregnancy are greater than dangers associated with spaying.
