When you deactivate you email notifications, you are only saying that you no longer wish to be notified to any future threads you post on. Those threads that you have already been subscribed to, will have to be individually deactivated. You can do this by clicking on the email where it says "unsubscribe to thread" or by going to User CP and listing "Subscribed Thread", and individually unsubscribing from them there.
Also for others, make sure you have chosen "instant notification", instead of daily or weekly, but it does sound like there is some glitch.
