Well, I certainly appreciate everyone's honesty so I can develop clear expectations for what the future holds.
See, I've had a cat for over 7 years, and have essentially had cats my whole life... I appreciated that they were easy to take care of and independent. After my college years and moving into graduate school, life has settled quite a bit, making a higher maintenance pet more feasible. I was concerned about getting a dog, because as a chronic overachiever I couldn't stand the idea of doing anything less than the best for a puppy. Then I realized that I don't have much of a life here anyway and that I could seriously use a companion, so I reconsidered. I'm so glad I did because DOGS. ARE. AMAZING.
