It would probably be best to start your own thread -- this one is from 2006!! My mom ran a great pet store years ago. She sold pet
supplies, along with fish and birds -- nothing else.
No cats or dogs of any kind. My mom wouldn't even sell turtles. Occasionally someone would come in and try to sell
her a dog and she would wind up bringing them home. That is actually how we got our first yorkie. A lady wanted my mom to sell him for her as she was moving or some excuse. My mom said no, she would not sell him but she would take him and give him a home. And that is how yorkie love started in our family.
There is NO right way to sell dogs or cats in a pet store. It is abuse pure and simple. No reputable breeder would ever sell her dogs to a pet store, so the only way they get them is from puppy mills and back yard breeders.
We always could use some more pet supply stores though -- with lots of premium food choices, grooming supplies, and of course lots of pretty clothes, carriers, and beds. I am sure you could make a good living with a pet store like that. If you wanted to sell fish & birds, that would be okay. Just be careful where you get your birds from too. My mom really had to be careful and go out and meet the bird breeders. She also went to all of the bird shows. Birds are kept in small cages, fish in tanks -- so you can easily sell them without abusing them. My mom actually got to be so good with bird health, the vets would rely on her experience! She was the "go to bird lady!"
So -- Never, Never, Ever, sell a dog or cat in your pet store and be careful to ensure the health of fish & birds. Keep the place extra clean and pest free. Check in to Yorkietalk from time to time to see new and innovative products. People here will find it if it is available and yorkies need or want it.
