I think the prevailing thought is don't do it unless it needs it. Apparently, you can do it so often that the dog can no longer express it on it own. Also, it should be done correctly, or you could be pushing the contents further up instead of out. I always recommend people ask their vet for a demonstration, and then visually check the area before baths. Signs of butt scooting and nibbling could suggest anal glands are too full, and need expressing.
