I would say if you have any doubt about getting another one, then maybe the time isn't right. Only you can answer that one.
I can say though, I'd never have just one. Dogs are social animals and do best in a pack. They play, they fight, but isn't that just like kids. They do keep each other company when the moms and dads are out of the house, and I think that's a big plus.
