Mine are pad trained and they also go outside. I love it this way simply because if we can't take them certain places, then we put pads down while were out. It's also great when going into motels and you don't really like going out in the dark or the rain. Mine will always use the pad if they aren't taken out. I love that. When they were puppies in training, they stayed in the xpen with the crate attached and a pad at one end and water at the other, along with toys. I took them outside every hour to run, play, train, and potty. At night we would put them on the sofa with us with a chew and a toy but not let them down on the floor. Then we would just take them outside every hour or if they were really restless. Worked for us.
