I have 4 and my thoughts on this are this....I am home all the time and they run free here in the house with me, so I am the Boss. I do not tolerate growling at each other etc, and they know it. All 4 get up on the futon and nap together, so cute. The older a doggie gets they sleep most all day so mine are quiet. I do have one barker, but they know what "no barking" means.
I have had spats in the past, but I nipped it in the bud.
Now, when I have to leave the house, the 2 youngest go to crates with only the 2 oldest, a male and female, running free. I usually shut a door between them just in case they spat while I am gone.
If you have a male, I would buy a female for his companion, but always remember, you are the Boss and they must know it.
