Yes, the top automatically closes together when they put their heads in, plus there is a detachable zipper top with a mesh area if you don't want them popping their heads out at all.
The sides are soft sides, just the fabric. It's very comfortable for both the dog and the owner.
When you pull it up on sites, you can see one site called pinkpuppy.com there are pictures with people wearing them with their dogs. There are also pictures of exactly how they are built with dimentions.
It looks like they have been around for a while but I just stumbled upon them. I have spent so much money over the years on different carriers, this is the one that seems the most comfortable for both of us.
