Lol, ticks are everywhere, depending on the area you live in. Jackson gets them in our backyard. They're disgusting -- I hate them, but it's definitely not just parks that have ticks. Keep them on a preventative like Frontline or K9 Advantix and it should help tremednously. Ticks do not carry heartworms either. That's totally different. That comes from mosquitoes, and you usually you get them on a heartworm preventative for those (Heartguard, etc).
Lymes disease comes from ticks, Jackson tested positive for it (and he's never gotten a tick at a park, only at our house) and was treated with antibiotics for 30 days and it cleared up.
