Trixie is a standard Yorkie, no flaws...at least not that we or our vet can find, yet she is not a 'show dog.' Even breeders who have show dogs and breed to produce show dogs will have pups in the litter that will not be 'show quality,' and are hence labeled 'pets.' Not even the most experienced show breeders are going to have litters where EVERY pup meets show requirements. So in a sense of looking at it, even show breeders breed for 'pets' too.
No, a true "show breeder" never breeds FOR pets, they breed for the ultimate, perfect, exact replica of the standard for the breed, which was put in place so that our breed would be consistant, not having 2 lb dogs and 12 lb dogs for instance. HOWEVER there are many genetics going into one litter, and sometimes there are pups born that are NOT show quality, in which case, yes they are sold as pets, on a limited registration. NO "show breeder" is breeding FOR pets, unless they are as unscrupulous as the BYB or miller down the road. But, on the other hand, don't be fooled as so many are, into thinking that just because someone shows, or says they show, that they have BETTER dogs, or should be trusted MORE, there are many puppymillers hiding behind a show bow, check references, check with the YTCA, do your homework before ever buying a yorkie puppy, but most important, research and understand the standard, and what health issues to be aware of, and what testing to ask for.
