An Oster A5 Golden (single speed) gets high praise. They come with a #10 blade -- close like for private area & pads. You will have to buy other blades depending on what you want to do. (higher the number, the shorter it cuts the hair). Here is a chart that will help in making buying decisions. Clipper Blade Chart: http://www.osterpro.com/includes/Cry...BladeChart.pdf

One of the best purchases I have made is the Wahl Peanut Trimmer. I liked it so much that when the cordless model came out, I bought that too. I can do most of my grooming needs with this trimmer. It is perfect for sanitary area, pads, ears, face, etc. I CAN actually trim the body hair with it too. It is made for people, I got mine at Sally's Beauty Supplies. It is advertised as the tiny peanut-sized trimmer with full size power. This is a great inexpensive way to start into grooming your own dog. It is not meant for a full cut down or anything major but you can do the main things in between major grooming trips and see if you like doing it before investing in a really good set of clippers.

Might try petedge.com when you do decide to buy clippers. Very good prices on all pet products!
Thanks so much!
