Definitely get refererences and talk to quite a few of them. That's very smart to do. I do understand the reluctance to pester the breeder too much but if they are truly in this for the betterment of the breed, they will understand your need for answers. But also, seeing the puppy in his/her surroundings and seeing the parents are a smart thing too.
