It is all about balance. A taller well proportioned dog is a joy to behold in the ring. but with the 7lb limit, that also defacto limits height x length, given proper bone structure.

In terms of Canadian Shows, I've not particularly noticed taller/larger dogs per say compared to where I have observed shows in the US. In canada, my boy is "tall" and is typically the tallest dog in the ring.
In terms of males in Canada, I think the judges for the most part, don't want too "small" a male ie 4lbs or so, also they want a good structured and sized female.
