I know I'm an old bag and shouldn't be giving beauty advice, but I have the same problem as you. Have you tried the new velcro hot rollers? I don't think they are as drying as curling irons or straigteners, and they leave your hair looking more conditioned and smooth. I use really big ones, so the curl is not tight. Some of the new models heat up in 3-5 minutes.
