My greyhound is very adept at escaping . The trainers at the Track suggested that rather than running after her(Yeah, I'm racing again and I'm winning)I was to sit on the ground and clap my hands and happily call her name like I wanted to play. Well it worked , but you can imagine how difficult it was to stay put and "happily" call her name while she headed for the busy street!! For my Golden I have a hand/verbal signal that means that I have something in my hand sooo good to eat, that its doggy heaven if you come back to me. I train with it occasionally to keep Dudley sharp and of course I keep a supply of"fried hot dog bits" in the freezer. Dudley will do anything for a fried hotdog bit.My grandson accidently let Dudley out of the yard this past spring and the command and hand signal stopped him on a dime. Of course the hotdog bit was still in the freezer but he came back to me and I maintained the hand signal(sort of like a roman salute, fist clenched arm across my chest ) and he followed me back to the house eyes never leaving my clenched fist until I went to the freezer and gave him a fist full of the blessed bits. Whew!!! Owen seems to be a real firecracker so I've got some safety recall training ahead of me if this "rescue" works out.
