Default Clippers/Grooming Question

I have a nice set of whal animal clippers and although I have never clipped a Yorkie before, I have experience in grooming/clipping other dogs, sheep and horses but I have never used the guards/guides before. When I went to give my Mylee a hair cut to even up her hair with her surgical shave, my clippers wouldn't cut her hair. The guards don't seem to pick up the hair and position it right and instead clogs my blades. She has super fine, silky/cottony hair that lays close to the skin. My blades are brand new, and it cuts just fine if I hold the hair up and then cut it. I think they would cut great without the guard/guides but it would be way too short for my liking. I managed to get through it, but it's so uneven and I think I can do better. Is it me or my clippers?
