I waited until just shy of 8 months due to concerns about retained teeth (we got lucky and only ended up with 1). Size wasn't an issue with my Porkie Yorkies

I've had spays/neuters done at any where from 12 weeks up to a year + depending on when the dog came to us and never had any problems.

The most important thing is that you have a vet who you trust.
