You haven't mentioned if you've owned a toy breed before; but if not the small dogs do have some special care needs, particularly as a young puppy.
Small and young bones can be fragile, so don't allow your pup in the early days to jump off couches, you need to be aware and on the look out for hypoglycemia (it is mentioned in the article I referred to above), also the YTCA recommends no pup goes home before 12 wks old and or 2 lbs.
I've not read the book you've asked about, but I think it's always a good idea once your pup has had all it's shots, to take it to basic puppy obedience classes, for socialization and for training.
