I have questions -- did the vet know that your Boone (houdini Lewellen setter) has been around the female puppy during heat? Is Boone an intact male too? Just wondering about the possibility of that dog mating with your little Yorkie puppy as well as the male yorkie. If the vet had known a larger dog had possibly impregnated your little one, he might not have been so eager to let her whelp the puppies. A larger breed could result in puppies much too large for your little one to safely bring to term, let alone whelp. Another question that comes to mind is: just how tiny is she? Do you know her weight? The weight of the two males? Regardless of size, she is too young for this stress, but I did wonder about the size differences.
I am also concerned over your comment that Tuffie used to growl but now that you have your 9 year old granddaughter, she just picks her up whether she likes it or not. Some 9 years olds are not really ready for a tiny puppy like a yorkie. I would not allow her to pick Tuffie up "whether she likes it or not." I would also be very sure to instruct her on the proper handling of such a tiny dog -- even moreso because she is pregnant. She could be fatally hurt by rough handling at this stage. Seriously --
she could die from too rough of handling.
I don't think anyone meant rudeness to you as much as some of us feel shock, frustration and sadness that a person taking on the RESPONSIBILITY of 3 pets would allow them to mate at such a very young age. When we take on that responsibility it is up to us to
research and learn what we need to do to provide proper care for them. There is so much to learn! Pet ownership does come with a great deal of responsibility. If I keep repeating that word (responsibility), it is because it is so important. These adorable little lives depend on us to care for them.
I am so glad to hear you are now taking responsibility and having your little puppy spayed. The surgery is more dangerous during pregnancy -- but not as dangerous as having a litter of puppies this young, and from possibly more than one sire. If she was allowed to be around your two male dogs while in heat, could there have possibly been others?
I feel for these tiny puppies taken away from their mothers and siblings at such young ages of 7 and 8 weeks old and now thrown into an adult situation at 8 months of age. I feel like their precious puppyhood has been robbed from them.
That is a little of what the other poster was probably feeling when they asked, "How could you?" Still -- we have to look on the positive side that you are now asking questions and are willing to do what is necessary so this little one will not have to go through a pregnancy so young. I hope you continue to learn about your puppies and the specifics of owning Yorkies. They are a blessing that requires some study & vigilance!
