I am opinionated about this, but am not angry with anyone. This issue is one of those either/or things, so passions do run high. Most of us that post on these threads know this, are used to it and don't let it get to us. We just disagree.
The whole parti issue is bigger than just with the Yorkshire Terrier and I think that should be acknowledged in order to have some perspective. There are other breeds that have parti breeders and the parent clubs have met this with mixed reactions. Some have accepted the parti colors and some have not, for reasons varying from adherence to a standard to real health concerns. I think it's interesting to look at the parti color phenomenon in the entire dog world rather than just with the Yorkshire. I do find it odd, however, that parti colors have been popping up in breeds not known for that trait. |
Well stated! That is the way I feel too. Of course all modern dogs are a combination of some breeds. The whole idea of coming up with the purebred registries was to have a point that each is considered their own breed. Once refined, the yorkshire breed was established with a set of standards. If anyone agrees with that notion, then how can they say any one of the standards is not important? Once we open that door, who is to say where it would stop? What other faults would then be up for acceptance?
I believe a breed is established the day it goes on the AKC (or other countries' equivalent) listing with standard established. That standard should be what every breeder strives to emulate. If a naturally occuring fault shows up, then spay/neuter is needed. No fault should purposely be a goal of a breeder's program. Many years, many breeders' lifetimes were spent breeding those faults OUT of the lines leading to the registered breed.
I don't dislike the puppies resulting from any breeding. I don't dislike the owners of these pups. I dislike the
PRACTICE of breeding outside of standards or health, whether that be color, size, ear set, structure, genetic health issues, etc....
