As a personal choice, I don't like crate training due to the limits of movement but many people on here do. However, since it isn't working, I too would suggest an xpen. It costs little compared to the comfort of your dog and you plus he will be better satisfied being able to relieve himself without having to lay in it and he has room to move about and play with his toys.
