Use a good tearless shampoo formulated for dogs to wash Max's head on bath days. I like BioGroom's Fluffy Puppy and I bathe my dogs at least once a week.
I use a warm washcloth, or cotton ball, and small comb daily, or as needed, to clean under the eye. Pat the area dry with another washcloth or cotton ball. Moisture encourages the growth of yeast, the stuff that creates tear stains.
Be very careful not to get anything in the eye itself. Only use sterile saline when necessary to wash eyes.
