Having fillings in nearly every tooth and then six (so far) root canals, I can tell you the fear is much worse than the reality. A modern dentist will swab your gums with a topical anesthetic before they even give the shot. Most of the time I don't even feel the shot -- except as a slight pinch and some pressure.

The shot doesn't last very long on me. I don't like to complain, so my dentist keeps an eye on me and offers another shot as soon as I begin to feel discomfort -- I'm a baby when it comes to dental pain.

Definitely share your concerns with your dentist. A lot of them will give twilight sleep and/or offer to have you listen to music to help you relax. It'll be over before you know it.
