The fabric isn't waterproof but seems thick enough. It doesn't seem flimsy. If it started sprinkling while you were out, I'm sure the fabric is thick enough to protect the babies until you got inside. The fabric kind of reminds me of a backpack if you know what I mean..lol I probably would lay a blanket or something down for them anyway.
