No one can answer this for you because it depends on your personal pain threshold. Some people it bothers not a bit, others scream like a banshee. If you have a very low threshold you can ask them to knock you out completely.
I'll tell you this, when my daughter had a cavity in her baby tooth, I think she was about 4yrs old. (she has excellent teeth now, don't know what happened) anyway, we came out from the dentist, and not a kid's dentist, I asked her what the dentist did to her and she said ''he pinched me to make me pretty''. That was it. Just a pinch to a 4yr old.
So, think of that and give it a whirl. If it hurts worse than that, tell him to stop and try something else like 'twilight sleep'. There are too many dentists out there offering '''painless dentistry'' to tolerate pain.
Oh, my DD's experience was about 30yrs ago, when things were a wee bit more barbaric...LOL
