I use a measuring cup to pour water down the back of the head and then the front, directing water away from the ears. I also hold down the ear flaps a bit, and I think my dogs keep their ears down. They have a lot of hair which may also help keep the water out. I have to use a washcloth on the sides of their heads to make sure no shampoo lingers at the base of their ears. Some books I have read recommend putting a cotton ball in their ears. I tried, but the cotton ball wouldn't stay put.
