I thought that retractable leashes were not the safest for little ones in case of attack... with a "solid" leash you can quickly haul the dog up into your arms (assuming it's wearing a harness that fits properly) and hopefully get it out of harm's way. A retractable one would depend on the user to have the button pushed in to prevent the leash from extending and I'm not sure that I would be level-headed enough to get it right in the case of a real emergency.

But then I'm one of those people that insists on at least two barriers between my dog and "freedom" because I'm such a worrier...
