I've seen one day care that I would send mine to. Before I had Beemer I took Sadie with me on a business trip to Ohio. I left her at Pet Palace. They do stay separate most of the time. They have supervised play time for I think an hour three times during the day with three to four like sized dogs. You can also request (and pay for) additional one on one people time - playing, throwing a ball, or just cuddling. They also gave you a report card at the end of the day that told you how they did and who they played with and how it went. It was perfect for my needs. I wouldn't leave mine in a situation where there are just a bunch of dogs without supervision. To me it's asking for trouble.
