My only advise against a playmate ( I really feel you need at least two at some point-after training) would be from my experience of having gotten two at one time-that wasn't so bad one was 19weeks the other was 2 years-it was my 1 year old at home that regressed a bit-he wasn't too hot on having another male around whom wasn't fixed and we had marking issues! That was about the extend of the real drama over it all-well and I can't walk Scoobers and Princess together I have to separately they feed off each-others naughtiness. If you've had them for a weekend that's great and probably how it will go...eventually you may run into pecking order establishment though-but during the extended periods did you just hang out and play with them and avoid your normal routine? I'd really be sure to follow your usual routine...knowing what you can actually handle and take on is very admirable-not "rescuing unambiguously"- make sure you are up to the task otherwise you may just want to offer help in re-homing for your friend...personally I feel that all dogs really do better in pairs

they are very social and need a companion on their level...but two is twice the everything

I've three...I'm at my limit here two are special needs I swear those two count as two each so its more like 5!
