He's hoping somebody will notice how pathetic he is making himself look and give in. The more you take it off, the more he will probably act like that. If he really can't eat well with it on, just take it off for meals only and closely supervise. A onesie is fine if you want to use it instead, but because it rubs on the incision it is always best to ask the your vet first.
