Honestly have you tried the pounds? They often have older purebreds (mixes too) there whom would be a great starter dog for someone and any health issue would potentially be known after a certain age-not that things don't develop. I actually felt the same way looking for my Yorkie-prices in CA seem to be a bit up there comparatively-I kept thinking wow spending thousands just to get the dog and then I have to get everything for them and pay for their care-the less I spend purchasing my dog the more I can spend on my dog! I found what I was looking for (after 5 years) online cheaper than I could have gotten here too, he arrived from across the country...even with shipping etc he was cheaper-huh I should have paid the several hundred more to a semi-local breeder I've spent far beyond that in medical care since...
