My vet says Belle is well socialized but I see her doing things that usually the mom takes care of in her own way. I think some of the agression toward the babies is to teach them what not to do. Belle would play kind of rough when she was first with us at 12 wks. she would bite harder then she should. I started grabbing her by the scruff and giving her a little shake and it didn't take long for her to know that was not acceptable. |
The gentle scruff shake was shown to me by a behaviorist too, it was actually supposed to simulate what a dam would do to her pups, reverting them to a basic dog behavior for understanding. One of my dogs tried to hump the kids all the time establishing pecking order) so the kids had to literally come over and lay down (not squishing) over him and put their hand on his throat-showing they were above him-then they got to give treats showing they controlled food and were higher up on the pecking order. I agree you need to talk to some breeders and see if they have a similar experience-I'm not a breeder, just a mom I just had to giggle (since it seems not violent but just animalistic) and think-gee I growl at my kids from time to time... suppose in a more animalistic situation I'd be closing their mouths for them too! Might be serious though and she may just not be up for having pups, ever again, how old is she?
