I really think that AKC's involvement with breeders is focused more on making sure their guidelines are met, not the conditions the dogs are kept in. AKC representatives have actually stated as much on several occasions. They may be more stringent in regards to accurate records being kept by breeders, but that's pretty much where their involvement starts and ends.

Bottom line is, it's up to 'us' as prospective owners to make those determinations for ourselves. You can't rely on the registry being used alone to ensure that the dog you are getting is not coming from a poor breeder.
