Sorry for your loss. I've heard that dogs, of any age, are subject to the same things humans get. They get heart attacks, strokes, and all kinds of things than can cause sudden death. You can have an autopsy done if you really want to know, but often they are not conclusive.

I agree with all the others here. It sounds like he went peacefully, and sometimes there is just nothing you can do or could have done. It's certainly not your fault, and it sounds like he lived a great, happy life.
