You also need to consider the risk unspayed dogs have of getting benign or cancerous mammary tumors. I don't know specifically what the incidence is in Yorkies except that I have heard it is pretty common. Having lost a beloved Cockapoo many years ago (the best dog EVER in the history of dogdom) during her third (as I remember) surgery to remove mammary tumors, I personally would take the risk of spay surgery in a young, healthy dog over the risk of cancer surgery in an older dog.
And not taking care of the teeth could cause tooth loss and life-threatening infection which can spread to the entire system, just as it can in humans.
I agree with baby yorkie about trusting your vet. You should sit down together and discuss all the pros and cons of having (or not having) the spaying and baby tooth removal done and make an informed decision.
I know it's not an easy decision to make -- and although I WILL have Tallulah spayed and her teeth taken care of when her vet says she's ready, I will be terrified until it's done and she's back home with me. But we all need to put aside our personal fears and make rational decisions about what's best for our little ones. |
