You're right, it's not required, but like I said, I get PM's from people who don't know how to contact vendors, and the vendor had no idea that their page was set to private. I would think a vendor would want to make it as easy as possible, and after all, many vendors offer a discount if you contact them. I was on one vendors page where you could not see the words "contact info" at all, so this even makes it harder for people to PM them.
