The Maltese is another one of my favorite breeds, and although I have had very limited experience with them and Yorkies, I see the Maltese as being more of a lap dog than a Yorkie. I guess it's the terrier in them, but Joey seems to want to guard the house, and be on the look out for intruders. My DIL's Maltese would be very happy to sit in my lap all day. I'm sure there are huge individual differences and this is just a generalization, but in general, it seems to be true. If you are undecided, I recommend you talk to really good breeders in your area, and choose the best breeder, not the best dog; that's what I did!
