In my pack I have two yorkies that I got as babies and are 1 1/2yrs old, they are what you would categorize as normal. Around two to two and half months ago I got two rescues, they were breeder females in puppy mills. They still won't touch a toy. One is extremely possessive of me and if in my lap first will snap viciously at any other dog that gets too close to us. If I put her in my lap second, it isn't an issue. When going to pick one up, she immediately cowers and waits. They are both 6yrs old. You have to remember that the life they've lived up to now is the only life they have known and they have no reason to believe that what they are now experiencing is real and permanent. It will take a long time for them to start trusting that this is the way it will stay. I don't know if mine will ever pick up a toy, or ever stop cowering, rubbing their bodies against the walls, etc... but, there is no way I could break this tenuous trust that we are slowly building by giving up on either one of them. We'll find our way together. If they come around and play with the other kids and go to normal, great...if not, so be it, we'll just love each other and deal with it until they travel to the rainbow bridge, hopefully as very very old ladies.
