Well, my Westie was four years old when we brought Lucy home. For him, a female dog worked better because he tends to be aggressive with other males. So, at least we got that right. He is still dominant with Lucy; but she has a more submissive personality - so it all works out.

Yes, probably another dog could ease your dog's lonliness during the long day. Mine entertain each other; but they still sleep a good bit if everyone is gone.

Your problem is going to be potty training a puppy while gone for 8 hours. Have you thought about adopting a slightly older dog? A lot of adoption agencies will let your first dog meet the second to kind of get a feel for how things could go.

I recommend an opposite sex dog for the easiest transition.
