I know it gets expensive, but they do need to rule out both pancreatitis and megaesophagus. Pancreatitis would require a very low fat diet and possibly drugs. Megaesophagus patients sometimes do better with certain textures of food and drugs. And if it is megaesophagus, there could be an underlying cause (hypothyroidism or myasinia gravis). I'd go ahead with the xray and Spec cPL like the vet is suggesting.
